5 Comic Books that Would Make Great TV Shows
#3 Y: The Last Man (Vertigo) by Brian K Vaughn & Pia Guerra
Apocalyptic stories usually feature genocide; this one has ‘gendercide’.
After a plague kills all mammals with the Y chromosome (penisoids*), only Yorick Brown and his monkey, Ampersand, survive. In their quest to find sexual balance in society, they must deal with deformed fanatics, militants and assassins.
Y: The Last Man could be a show featuring strong concepts like sexism, feminism and social evils. But it has a comic tone, because the last man is de facto the luckiest man. Well, maybe not.
Moreover, the TV version should easily gain a cult following because of its potential to cast sexy powerful female supporting characters.

#2 Locke & Key by Joe Hill
Locke & Key is the tragic tale of the Locke siblings. They move to their ancestral home, Key House, after their father is murdered by a psychotic killer. The house carries many untold secrets, and every Locke has a key.
The comic book presents a macabre story of friendship and growing up. This is solid mini-series material that would work best in the Sherlock format.
Still not convinced? What if I told you that writer Joe Hill is the son of the legendary Stephen King?
PS: Don’t let the kids watch this.
#1 Irredeemable (Boom! Studios) by Mark Waid
What if Superman turns to the Darkseid (pun intended)? What if he starts butchering everyone on earth? What if the rest of the Justice League is wetting their beds? What if kryptonite is not his weakness?
The answer is Irredeemable. The Plutonian has defected to evil and it is up to his former team, the Paradigm, to stop him.
Irredeemable is a powerful script for an HBO original drama. The story has twists, violence, scandals and sex. Interesting powers that the world has never seen and a non-linear narrative (Nolan-style) are added bonuses.
This serialized tale of redemption can give Game of Thrones a run for their money. And it will make you fear Superman more than… Hey, who threw that batarang?
