Retro Comics FTW!
As Facebook has caught on well and it’s reach is the best way to pass on information, he used it as a means to spread his love for comics and to create a community that shares this love with him. Jameel started by posting images from his collection, followed by information about vintage comic books and publishers. Eventually people who took a liking to the concept joined the page and started posting themselves forming an enthusiastic group with shared interests.
“Nostalgia is an undying trait,” Jameel believes, “I post content which rekindles ones memory from the past. It’s the reason why people visit the page repeatedly and participate.” Even though life paces by fast there are those few things that we will never forget and will cherish throughout our lives. This Facebook community has helped a lot of people go back to that time to that point in their lives and enjoy these comics once again.
Owing to the ever-growing community, Jameel plans on creating a market space within the page where people could buy and sell comics. This is still under development and he dreams of making a large catalogue of Indian comics, where one could see all the front covers and get all the info they need and then acquire any retro Indian comic book ever published. He says, “I also want to allow the sale of vintage collectibles, magazines and even advertisements from all major and unknown Indian publishers.”
After rising to fame he had been approached by a couple of publishers who were interested in using this community he had formed to sell their comics. Making money out of this isn’t really the actual plan for him. “The media has given me attention. The support is strictly within the theme of preservation and curating,” he said. “But not for any personal gains,” he adds quickly and says, “The money I make from the page will go into procuring more comic books.”
